Escultora y mecenas de las artes estadounidense. Bisnieta de Cornelius Vanderbilt, nació en el seno de una familia muy acaudalada, y estudió escultura en Nueva York y París. Entre sus obras más destacadas se cuentan el
Monumento al Titanic (
1914–31) en Washington, D.C. y el
Arco de la victoria (1918–19) en Nueva York. Todas sus obras eran simples, directas y tradicionales. En 1929 ofreció donar su colección, compuesta por unas 500 obras de artistas estadounidenses modernos al Museo de Arte Metropolitano de Nueva York, la que fue rechazada por el director de carácter tradicionalista. Al año siguiente fundó el museo Whitney de arte estadounidense, también en la ciudad de Nueva York, el que abrió sus puertas en 1931. En la actualidad es el principal museo de arte de EE.UU.
